Chapter 12: The Nuclear Family and Their American Dream

Frank left Allen and Dima to their search for city hall so that he could find his wife and kids. While many lives were lost at Bartow, there were still many people coming in. Refugees came from Clearwater, Sarasota, Orlando, and Kissimmee. The growing population made the survivors hopeful that humanity would survive this test, yet troubled by the many more mouths to feed. Frank could faintly hear his wife’s voice. A search led him into view of Austin. Frank made his way through the crowd. It reminded him of his family’s trip to Universal Studios a couple years prior. Finally, he and his family reunited.

“What’s the news?” asked Mathew.

“They’re letting us stay here. Allen said we should pick a house to stay in. Duane, Tony, and Colin may have to bunk with us as well,” said Frank.

“Pick a house?” asked Belinda.

“A lot of them are abandoned. People evacuated up north before things got bad. The sheriff says we’re welcome to what’s left,” said Frank.

“It’s going to be weird living with Tony, the guy who fired you,” said Mathew.

“And he was your boss. I guess you’re all out of a job now,” said Austin.

“Have you seen Tony lately? Or Duane or Colin?” asked Frank.

“Duane was with Tony last I saw,” said Mathew.

“We left Colin in Bartow to figure things out,” said Belinda.

“Right. We’ll catch up to them eventually. For now, let’s go find a house,” said Frank.

They walked down a road in a small neighborhood. One house looked abandoned. Flowerpots out front. Painted dark orange with bits of white where the orange had faded. They approached the house.

“Locked,” said Frank.

Mathew jiggled the doorknob a little and the door cracked open.

“Never mind,” said Frank.

They entered the house.

“Will this be big enough?” asked Mia.

“We’re about to find out,” said Mathew.
